Have you ever come across a person who just shines? A person who, every time you see her, smiles big, makes you feel better, and brightly exudes the evidence that she is living her destiny? Well, I do. Lululemon Ambassador and Fitness Coach Kellie S is one of those women.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
Lululemon Ambassador (yes, I wrote that twice. that is a a huge accomplishment in the talented fit city of San Diego) Kellie is what the world needs. She has COME ALIVE.
The Better Business Babe places a high value on health and fitness. We believe that in order for you to succeed in business and in life, your health has to be numero uno on your priority list. Our philosophy: Business + Lifestyle => must be in Balance. We believe that, in order to find that balance, we must embrace a community of women and the power of positive self-image. Kellie is the outward embodiment of our Mission: We are all better together. Kellie is wise, peaceful, motivational, and promotes self-love and COMMUNITY (a word we wholeheartedly embrace here at BBB).
Kellie is a high energy fitness coach at OrangeTheory Fitness, Spark Cycle and private trainer. She was raised by a uber-conservative Christian family in Florida, where dancing and rock music were off-limits. Her journey eventually led her to California, married to the love of her life, and now, via her role as instructor (it’s such a misnomer really, she’s more like a emotional healer/personal trainer/community/soul inspirer), Kellie changes lives one client at a time through fitness. Her theory is to equip and empower her clients to help them change their lives, inside and out.
She has guided me through many a tough, tired, worn out day, and now I desperately anticipate (and, embarrassingly, am entirely too dependent on) her weekly classes.
Thus, entering February, our month of LOVE, Kellie is our featured Better Business Babe.
One of Kellie’s gifts is her positive philosophy. She pours soul into all that she does. Her passion for life is palpable and infectious. Every time I see her, she radiates a sort of light and energy that is the result of a woman who’s not only living her purpose, but is doing so knowingly, mindfully.
In her own words….
“Fitness is a Spiritual Awakening”
The Power of Fitness.
Exercise is a catalyst. My journey into fitness sparked my personal transformation. I had a horribly unhealthy relationship with food. I was overweight. I was not happy in my marriage. I was not being honest with myself, my life. Fitness was the catalyst that changed my entire path. It is often looked at through the distorted lenses of appearance, but I tell each one of my students/clients, fitness is so much more than that: it’s a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING. It taught me self-awareness, gave me confidence and a healthy self-image. It showed me my passions and revealed the pathway of my purpose: to help others, to elevate more people, to teach everyone I come into contact with to feel better about themselves. It took me a long time, but through fitness, I found what makes me come alive.
LIVE YOUR PASSION.
Everyone is capable of living their OWN LIFE. When I am most passionate, I am my best self! Be honest with yourself: Are you living your best self? For so many years, I wasn’t. I was raised to be “perfect,” I was raised to do everything “right” and, as such, I settled, I wasn’t vulnerable, I wasn’t honest. I lived the expectations placed upon me. The funny thing is: I had NO IDEA I was settling! I had no idea there could be something better! It took many years, and it took several great mentors before I woke up, before I began to actually discover and live my own truth.
There were pivotal moments in my life where my perspective dramatically shifted. Those moments came from close, trusted mentors. Those people helped me make a shift. They taught me to STOP.PAUSE.QUESTION EVERYTHING. The mentors challenged me to question my life and, for once, think for myself. To stop thinking about what was expected of me, instead think about what I wanted out of my own life! The mentors and friendships gave me pivotal fresh perspectives at key moments of my journey.
We are who we surround ourselves with.
So….who do you surround yourself with?
Is that relationship healthy?
Do you have a mentor you trust, that can guide you through life?
Authenticity! (one of our fave words here at BBB)
I believe in being authentic and the power it brings. I take the time before each one of my classes to have connection and conversation. I make the time to connect with my spouse. I hang out in the lobby before classes, say hi, hug, talk, introduce, and CONNECT to each person. It’s my way of uplifting my clients and building a community.
Take the time to connect.
BUT! Being authentic isn’t just about how you interact with others, it is, first and foremost, about being authentic with yourself. Really, how often are we genuinely authentic, vulnerable, and honest in our own heads? Avoidance never brings what you want in life. EVER. I challenge you: Stop. Have a truly authentic conversation with yourself about the direction of your life. Ask: What brings me joy? What takes my joy away?
We cannot be fulfilled, find happiness or peace without honest self-awareness.
I give a lot to others by the very nature of my job. I give energy ALL.DAY.LONG. Because I am teaching/coaching/training so much during the week, I can quickly become off balance and exhausted. Thus, I have learned a very power tool: I SIT STILL. I am very careful with my schedule. When I feel foggy, cloudy, tired, I take the time to evaluate. I look at what is on my plate, and MAKE A SHIFT. I take time to reset. I will literally sit down and look at my calendar, my schedule, my life, and ask myself: Who/what am I putting my energy into? What can I take out to preserve myself? I give myself the chance to MAKE A SHIFT. It has brought me self-awareness. It preserves my energy. For the first time in my life, I am making decisions based on my energy taxation.
I often hear a lot of reasons why people don’t have time to exercise or live their dreams. It’s very often responsibilities and demands of job, kids, family, activities. Those are legitimate, real-world life expenditures. Yet, they’re not roadblocks, not barriers. The barriers are the negative thoughts we allow to poison our mindset. This is where energetic taxation and balance are so absolutely vital to one’s health…and so often it leads to not fulfilling our passions in life!!
My advice to start your physical transformation: Just Move. Move for 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes. You don’t have to run a marathon on day one. Just do something. Sometimes I can only find time or energy to hold plank in my living room for a few minutes. Make movement part of your daily day to day, and the transformation will occur.
Kellie’s TIPS to finding what makes you COME ALIVE!
Self Love = Self care Our bodies are meant to move. If you’re new to exercise and fitness, start small. Go for a walk, clear your head. Taking time to care for yourself, to pay attention to our bodies, is vital for self-love, for self-esteem, for a positive self-image. I often tell my classes and clients: challenge yourself today. You are stronger than you think. When you’re struggling, just.keep.moving.
STOP AND CELEBRATE So often we just “move onto the next.” We do not stop and celebrate our accomplishments. I encourage you: Take a moment, stop. Celebrate it! Praise yourself! Don’t just move onto the next task of your day mindlessly. Take those moments throughout your entire day, and PRAISE your accomplishments, however big, however small. It will dramatically change your mindset, and so much of happiness is simply that: a MINDSET.
Self LOVE = Loving OTHERS. Drop the competition. Drop the comparisons. I call this “the Comparison Vortex.” It’s dangerous. It’s unhealthy. It robs you of joy. It taxes your energy. I will never encourage competition in my classes. Competitiveness stresses me out. It creates stress, fear, anxiety.
Instead, the power of community is a much more powerful tool. Community creates an energy, and is a potent force in our lives. We love ourselves = when we love others. My goal in life, personally and professionally, is to build community. Having a bad day? Give kindness to someone else. It will energize and elevate you. Also, when we give to others, we not only benefit ourselves, but we make them come alive.
Change your MINDSET.
Authentically ask yourself: WHAT STIRS MY SOUL??? When we discover and go after that which brings us joy and passion, then we find our purpose. When you come alive, people will notice. Get off auto-pilot. Stop just existing. SLOW DOWN and begin each day with gratitude. Focus on optimism, not obstacles….and above all, BE YOU. I often ask my classes to look in the mirror and say to themselves, “I look good today.” Try it, you’ll be amazed how powerful it is.
EVALUATE YOUR ENERGY TAXATION.
Step 1: Be still.
Step 2: Look at your schedule, your daily life. Write it all down and honestly ask: What do you put your energy into?
Step 3: Then ask yourself this very important question: Does it energetically recharge, elevate you? Or does it drain you? What puts your energy in the negative?
Step 4: Cut out that which does NOT serve you. Create balance in your life. When you find what makes you passionate, MAKE TIME FOR IT.
To come alive, to live life with passion, we must discover what ignites our SOUL. We must be authentic, we must make ROOM for our passions in our very busy hectic lives. We must have balance. We must utilize the power of community…but it all starts with being still.
