Emily’s fashion sense is effortless, relaxed, cool and hip, yet sophisticated, and classic. BALANCE is key here at The Better Business Babe, so Emily’s styling tips are the perfect balance of trendy and classic~ giving you the best fashion success at home or in your workplace.
Emily’s Four Fall to Winter Wardrobe Essentials:
1. Pair of boots
3. Cardigan/sweater/or utility jacket
4. Fun accessory
This is all you need to feel stylish and trendy for the new season. Invest in these items for your wardrobe, and you can create 30 new outfits. Voila! You’re good to go for Fall. (Emily’s from Switzerland and is fluent in French, so I had to add that in there.)
1. Buying the perfect Fall boot.
Emily’s current fall obsession: “This fall it’s worth purchasing an ankle boot and an over-the-knee boot (OTK). Chic AND comfortable. You can wear OTK boots with leggings, a sweater, grab a hat and you’re dressed in 5 minutes and super cute because of the OTK detail. They are comfortable, totally stylish, versatile, and make a fashion statement. Ankle booties are a fall staple and will never go out of style.”
“You don’t need to break the bank. Shop smart. Look for the sales. Shop Nordstrom Rack, DSW or outlets. Outlet malls are fantastic! They carry high end, classic styles from previous years. My fav brands for boots are Stuart Weitzman (always on clearance at outlets), Sam Edelman and Marc Fisher to name a few. I also love Zara (low prices and very trendy), Sole Society and Vince Camuto. Vince Camuto somehow is able to create exact copies of high-end designer wear, but the price point is affordable! Look online, compare prices. Check out Ebay and Poshmark. Both sites often carry the exact model you are looking for, brand new or used at a much lower cost.”
Conclusion? “Buy quality boots at reduced price. Buy basic colors-grey, black or beige or camel. It creates wardrobe DIVERSITY and can be paired with anything for years.”
2. The Perfect Fall Hat.
When I think of the Fall season, I think of hats. Hats just make an outfit POP. “Know what color suits you (and what you’re drawn to). Fall hats are not limited to just fedoras. Look at beanies, berets, newsboy caps. Beanies with fur pom pom are super trendy this fall. Right now, the Greek Fisherman’s cap is on point, very trendy and stylish, easy to wear, and goes with just about everything.”
Emily’s fav hat companies:
Emily’s hat styling tip: “Summer = straw. Fall = felt or wool. Seems obvious, but trust me, it’s important to change with the seasons. And one of my fav styling tips is match your booties to your hat! It really makes your outfit look complete.”
3. The Perfect Fall cardigan/sweater/jacket.
“I know I said don’t break the bank to re-vamp your wardrobe, and I meant it. Generally, I do NOT spend a lot of money on clothes. I spend on accessories. However, there are exceptions. My number one tip here: DO NOT buy a cheap sweater or cardigan. This is where you should invest some money.”
Buy less, choose better. NO acrylic or polyester here. Only high quality wool or cashmere, which can be found at low cost at outlets and sales. Why? “Because it will last multiple seasons and will be used for years! So, find one that is of good quality. Trust me, it’s worth it. You’ll wear this piece more than you realize.”
Make it Versatile. “The trend this year is ultra-thick knits and oversized. It’s a fun, flattering cut, especially if you have areas you would rather conceal. Also, be creative! If you’re going to spend money, buy the classic that catches your eye, with lux fabric, (holiday online sales are perfect for this!) I personally don’t spend a lot of money on trendy outfits. That’s just my way of saving money. I spend my money on classics I can keep for years.”
Capes. “Winter capes are in right now as well, they can be dressed down with jeans, or layered over a cocktail dress for a night out. Ponchos are also a good alternative, but more limited in versatility.”
Utility Jacket. “Don’t underestimate the power of a simple utility jacket this Fall. I’m all about the utility jacket. It’s comfortable, warm, and has a timeless appeal. You can also layer over new trends. They’re super affordable too.”
4. A fun accessory.
Last, but not least, Emily suggests “get ONE piece that ZINGS.”
Her fav examples:
- Faux-leather skirt or faux-leather pants
- Printed, textured scarf, “a bold print will add contrast to a neutral outfit.”
- Statement necklace
- Studded purse
- Grommet belt
- Pair of bright-colored earrings
- Go for stripes! “Stripped long sleeve tee always makes a fashion statement.”
- Fall inspired dress. “Fall dresses are underrated. They can be styled and layered in countless ways! Pair with your cardigan/sweater and booties for a casual outfit, or layer on the leather jacket, tights, and high boots for a cold day/night. Take your summer maxi dress, pair it with boots, denim jacket, and boom, you’re fashion forward.”
Emily’s Tips to Great Styling
Tip #1 Be a Minimalist. “First and foremost, You do NOT need to buy a whole new wardrobe! (especially since it’s predicted to be one of the warmest winters of record for many parts of the country.) Stick to essential basic pieces.”
Tip#2 Don’t spend on trend. “Purchase classic pieces that have a twist. i.e., a black cardigan with a funky shape or adorned with stars. Don’t spend on trendy items. Go cheap on the ruffle sleeve top. This trend wont last, however, you will always wear and use a black cardigan for years.”
Tip #3 Stop buying more of the same. Go for something unexpected. “Spend your money on ONE new, different piece. that’s it! To add depth and a classic touch to your wardrobe.”
Tip #4 Chic winter white. “I am all about white jeans in the Fall. Traditionally considered a ‘no no’ after August, this year, however, white jeans are definitely IN for all seasons. Also, because we live in California, you can wear all white year round. Don’t be afraid to wear all white, pair with grey sneakers or camel boots. It’s super easy chic winter white.”
Tip #5 It pays to wait. Buy your items at the end of the season when the best sales are on and stores are clearing for the new season.”You will get great deals on expensive, durable items.”
